The History of TYRON

The Tyron Safety Band was invented in 1977 and consisted of a special Aluminium wheel and Aluminium Tyron band.

Tyron recognised that a special wheel with band was expensive and restricted market penetration; in 1979 it was decided to make Tyron Bands to fit the existing wheels on a vehicle.

These first ‘well filler’ bands were sold throughout the world, primarily to military, government and security organisations.

In the early 80’s due to a request from the British MoD, Tyron brought out a range of steel bands for the Land Rover steel wheels, not only where they far stronger than the aluminium bands but also solved the problem of ‘catalytic’ reaction between the two different metals, the Aluminium bands where welding onto the steel wheels preventing removal of tyres when they needed to be changed.

Through 1991/3, Tyron undertook a substantial investment in modern automated tooling to produce Tyron bands within the scope of ISO 9000. The new bands being substantially lighter and easier to fit, was also standardised in steel with a new corrosion resistant ‘finish’ which overcame the necessity for different materials. The new Tyron Safety Band is suitable for both Steel and Aluminium wheels.

Through 1995/6 further development produced a new range of heavy duty but lightweight bands for truck wheels, from 17.5" to 22.5" diameter.

The fixings of all current Tyron bands comply with DIN specifications and have been developed so that spares are universally available off the shelf.

In 2002 Tyron re-designed and patented a new Tyron Band which is adjustable for height to accommodate the changing designs in wheel wells, this new design not only improves the handling performance of the vehicle, but also, the ‘plug in’ feet create extra ‘grip’ between the Tyron band and the wheel which improves the braking and acceleration of the vehicle, out performing any other well filler today, especially when more than 1 tyre is deflated.

With fast delivery from stock, an extensive world wide aftersales and service network, approvals with military, vehicle, tyre and wheel manufacturers, Tyron continues to lead the field in civilian and military wheel safety, security and runflat systems and solutions.

CONTINUOUS DEVELOPMENT

To meet the changing needs of the automotive industry the Tyron Group continuously develops new well filler band designs, for military, commercial and civilian applications, for both steel and alloy wheel assemblies.

As more vehicles use alloy wheels and lower profile tyres, design emphasis has been to produce lighter weight bands, while increasing strength and durability. Today's bands must cope with the stresses imposed by a 150mph blow-out, when fitted to a high performance alloy wheel and low profile tyre assembly, for example on a Police Traffic Patrol vehicle.
